EFRC NEES Teleseminar - William McGehee Cold Atom Focused Lithium Ion Beams: A New Paradigm for Battery R&D? William McGehee NRC Postdoctoral Researcher Abstract: The development of Li focused ion beams enables controlled Li ion insertion into materials with nanoscale resolution. We take the first step toward establishing the relevance of the Li-FIB for studies of ion dynamics in electrochemically active materials by comparing FIB lithiation with conventional electrochemical lithiation of isolated \Beta-Sn microspheres. Samples are characterized by cross-sectioning with Ga FIB and imaging via electron microscopy. The Li-FIB and electrochemical lithiated Sn exhibit morphological similarities that suggest that the Li-FIB can be a powerful tool for exploring dynamical Li ion-material interactions at the nanoscale in a range of battery materials. Future work focusing on FIB lithiation of silicon will also be discussed with a brief literature review. Dr. William received a B.S. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focused on quantum simulation of strongly-correlated and disordered systems using ultracold Fermi gases. William is working with Jabez McClelland to build the second generation lithium-ion microscope for studying nanoscale ion transport in battery-relevant materials.
