Energy Frontier Research Center - Nanostructures for Electrical Energy Storage (EFRC-NEES) principal investigator Chunsheng Wang (Dept. of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and Dept. of Chemistry & Biochemistry) is going to talk about his recent work on the high loading LiFePO4 (LFP) composite porous electrode.

Title: In Operando characterization of Ion and Electron transport in porous electrode toward defining the limiting step

Speaker: Chunsheng Wang, University of Maryland

Abstract

The application of high loading electrode as an effective strategy to achieve of battery energy density has yet to be realized, and most noticeably, the system is often plagued by severe kinetic penalty. The currently available experimental platforms are incapable of providing comprehensive characterization of the different kinetic contributions in the porous electrode during cycling. Here we demonstrated an approach based on a customized electrochemical cell to differentiate the potential drops caused by ionic versus electronic transport, charge transfer and solid phase diffusion in porous electrode under battery operational conditions. We have successfully decoupled the overall overpotential into its components, which in terms helps to elucidate the nature of the transitional limiting step. We further demonstrated the contributing factors for capacity loss, e.g. liquid phase diffusion and ohmic potential drop, and their interplay in determining the usable capacity.
